About Speedtype
Created and reviewed by Saurabh Last reviewed: August 18, 2026
Speedtype is an independent typing-practice application created by Saurabh, a software developer focused on practical learning tools. He built Speedtype to provide a clean, accuracy-first typing experience for English and Marathi users.
The project is designed around a simple principle: a score should be understandable. Speedtype therefore publishes its scoring method, keeps gross activity separate from error-adjusted speed, and covers important calculations with automated regression tests.
What Speedtype provides
- Timed Practice sessions with one-, three-, and five-minute options.
- English and Marathi passage pools with three internal difficulty labels.
- A private race against a configurable bot target.
- A daily three-minute challenge for signed-in users.
- Private multiplayer rooms created and joined with a room code.
- Local result history, with personal cloud synchronization when available.
Speedtype does not operate a public global ranking, does not provide a professional typing certificate, and does not promise a particular improvement within a fixed period. Results are personal practice measurements that depend on the selected passage, duration, language, device, and input method.
How scoring is maintained
The timer begins with the first accepted keystroke. Gross WPM is based on attempted keystrokes, while net WPM and accuracy account for unresolved character errors. English comparison is case-sensitive. Visually equivalent quotation marks and non-breaking spaces are normalized before comparison.
The complete formulas, examples, correction behavior, and limitations are published in the scoring methodology. When scoring logic changes, the methodology and automated tests must be updated together.
Passage standards
Practice passages are maintained as original Speedtype content rather than presented as quotations from unidentified sources. A release-ready passage must have coherent meaning, correct spelling and punctuation, and an appropriate difficulty label.
Marathi passages receive an additional review by a fluent reader before deployment. The current passage set was reviewed by Saurabh on August 5, 2026. If a passage is unclear or incorrect, report its opening sentence, language, and difficulty through the contact page.
Editorial standards
Speedtype guides are written and reviewed by Saurabh. Editorial pages must follow these rules:
- Do not publish an unsupported statistic or improvement guarantee.
- Distinguish Speedtype's internal behavior from an industry-wide standard.
- Describe current functionality, including limitations, rather than planned features.
- Add a review date and update it when the product behavior changes.
- Use reproducible examples when explaining a calculation.
- Correct reported errors visibly instead of silently preserving inaccurate copy.
The Speedtype Lab applies those rules to narrow product questions. Its articles identify the implementation or review record checked, provide worked or reproducible examples, and state what the current evidence cannot establish.
Data and accounts
Practice and Race can be used without signing in. Result history and settings are stored in the browser. Firebase Authentication with Google or email and password is used for features that need an account, including cloud run history, Daily, and private multiplayer rooms. Details are available in the Privacy Policy.
